What Your PC is Trying to Do - part two (4ACC 540322)
Series: 4th Advanced Clinical Course (4ACC)
Date: 22 March 1954
Speaker: L. Ron Hubbard
Okay, this is March the 22nd, second lecture of the day, continuing data on what your preclear is trying to do and this time I'm giving you a little bit of patter that goes along with three important processes.
Our problem with a thetan who doesn't exteriorize is he has his own universe because of communication—you understand this, because of communication. In other words, he's a nothingness which is communicating with a somethingness. Well, he eventually slides down the line and he's the nothingness communicating with the somethingness and then he becomes the somethingness communicating with somethingnesses, you see that? He mocks-up his own universe as a somethingness and communicates out of it to the rest of existence. You see this?
As long as he's operating as himself—a nothingness with potentiality, personality and so forth, all these things—as long as he's operating as himself, this nothingness, and communicating to somethingness and nothingness at will, why, then he's perfectly capable of communicating and being and so forth. But as soon as he slides down from being a nothingness and goes into this mass somethingness and as that somethingness begins communicating, what's communicating then? Well, you've got machinery, you've got all kinds of fixations, you've got innumerable engrams, facsimiles that he can just shuffle this way and that: somethingnesses which are supposed to communicate out with the mountains and—that is to say, the physical universe—and with other bodies and so forth.
Now, he gets in bad condition when he gets into a field which has—only up to this time, however—but which has offered a very bad trap for a thetan. They ask the thetan to communicate with a nothingness and define this nothingness as space. And that's religion. You see? They've got him balled up now—he's a somethingness, he'd just be a massive somethingness—and now they turn around and ask him to communicate with God and then define God as all space, MEST universe. That's mostly how it's defined. He's out there in the upper air and so forth. Well, that's about the wickedest operation that you could engage upon, because he is of course unable to communicate with this nothingness and yet this nothingness can at any moment have an effect upon him and there's no way for him to give any warning to it or something of this sort.
Well, this is the way people spin in. There's usually some religion in it mixed up someplace. But religion is only one manifestation—I'm not condemning religion, we're trying to reform it—the one manifestation of the thetan becoming a somethingness which approximates the physical universe and then as that somethingness communicating with the physical universe continually and obsessively. See, he never can draw back. He just keeps on forming and reforming somethingnesses which he is, in order to communicate with the physical universe and with, of course, other people's universes. So when we get him into a state where he's in a body and we ask him to be three feet back Of his head and he is unable to do this, we have run into what? We have run into a thetan who has to one degree or another become a somethingness.
Because he is this somethingness, he is then communicating to somethingnesses. It'd be very difficult for this preclear to look at space—even to look at space. And somebody demanding that he look at space would shatter him. He can't look at a nothingncss. HC really can't see a nothingness very easily. And trying to communicate with a nothingness, then the somethingnesses, which he has become, disintegrate, go to pieces, he loses all the effort that he has. See, he could probably hang in this state of having become a something and going on communicating with other people's universes and so forth and the physical universe, but what happens is, is you ask him to communicate with a nothingness now, he just feels himself disintegrate.
Well, he feels himself disintegrate, he's got himself identified as a somethingness, you see? And a somethingness trying to communicate with a nothingness, of course, is unable to achieve any duplication, so we have the nothingness merely communicating with him and it labels him what? Nothingness. So we get—his bank starts going completely haywire. The form which he takes, then, becomes less and less distinct and we get him worked down to a point where he is actually a somethingness which is inverted into being a nothingness which is still trying to communicate with somethingnesses-nothingnesses and, boy, is he lost. He's inverted, he probably has a remote viewpoint stuck out someplace, he can't be a body, so on.
Well, the point of rescue on this case that's all the way down is to at least get him up to a point where he can be some somethingnesses, you see. And get him up to some somethingnesses and then when he's very, very confident about being able to be a lot of somethingnesses and so on, we sneak him back into being a nothingness. In other words, we reverse the agreement.
What are we handling? We're handling his own universe which has gotten into the mass—a mass state. Here, let us say, is a piece of cellophane—sort of a nothingness, see. And it's perfectly clear, you could impress a lot of things on it, you could write on it with ink, you could do a lot of things. And while he's in control of it and it's perfectly clear, he's all right—he can communicate with somethingnesses and nothingnesses at will because he can take this piece of cellophane, which is his own universe, you might say, and he can mock it up as a duplicate of anything. Therefore, he can go on and communicate. All right.
Now, what happens to this individual after he's mocked-up this obsessively? See, he's mocked it up into more and more shapes obsessively. It isn't the quantity of shapes, it's how obsessive he is about mocking it up into shapes. You see that?
All right, we take this piece of paper here and we could make some kind of a picture like this, see. Now if we get that idea of a set mass—opaque, so forth—that's a somethingness. Well, that actually is the GE. It's something that has gotten into such a fixed mass that it can only follow these patterns and it follows it obsessively and it walks right on off. That's the GE's system.
But your thetan is some gradient scale of this mass. All right, if we really want to drive him mad we say, "All right, communicate with that nothingness over there," This is the one thing he can't do. I mean, he hasn't got any nothingness left here. Then the nothingness will communicate with him and we'd get this going all sort of foggy and sloggy and so on. It would be a something which he had to be convinced was a nothing. We say, "Now, now, fellow, you can't get rid of your ulcers any other way, why don't you go pray?" [humming] Here we go!
Now we ask this boy to go out into space and confront in space, space—as a watch officer, let us say, get some space opera in this, and we just make him a watch officer. He's standing there as a somethingness looking continually and fixedly at nothingnesses; he'll invert. That is to say, he'll kind of have a feeling that he isn't there. And the first thing that starts dawning on him and the first rescue of the case when you get this preclear is "Look-a-here, I could be something." He is something, he has a mass. Now, of course that mass is actually an other-determined mass. So in the first reaches of the case you're continually reaching up the line—continually reaching up the line—toward more somethingnesses, until you've at least recovered his ability to be a mass. All right. If now we've recovered his ability to be a mass with considerable certainty, then we can back him off to a nothingness. By doing what? By asking him to be spaces.
So we get Change of Space Processing. Now, there's two varieties of Change of Space Processing: one is "be the space" and the other is "be the place in space."
Now you can do Change of Space Processing on a fellow's own universe. You can ask him to be in this space or that space of his own universe. His own universe has been modeled to agree with the physical universe. And most of the preclears that you run Change of Space Processing "on the physical universe," you say (you know, you run Change of Space Processing), actually are processing it in their own universe.
You say, "Now be at the entrance point of the MEST universe. Now be here. Entrance point of the MEST universe. Be here. Entrance point of the MEST universe... " And we go on this way for some time: "Entrance point of the MEST universe," "Be here." "The entrance," "Here." "There," "Here." "Be at that point," "Here." "Point," "Here." "Point," "Here."
Vary your talk a little bit so that he'll keep alert to what you're doing and so it doesn't settle into a machine: "Point," "Here." "Point," "Here." "Point," "Here." "Point," "Here." "Point," "Here." "Point," "Here." "Point," "Here." All of a sudden he's liable to tell you, "You know, something blew up." Something did this or did that.
All right, we've cleaned up that point. That is a point in space. The objects are gone. There is a present time for that point in space. The existence of facsimiles in its vicinity give it the appearance of being in past time. So we have the problem of the preclear at first is present, maybe—he's in present time in the building he's in, then he's present time in the room he's in, then he's only present time in—just in his body and then he's not even present time in his body. This is the dwindling spiral of present time versus area.
All right- We ask him to be here and be there and so forth. What it does: it releases into their proper time category these positions in space. It actually discharges geographical locations. These locations are so tightly associated with facsimiles that the facsimiles tend to stay in a ball.
In that place in space, by the way, the facsimile is not riding one inch back of the preclear's ear. The entrance to the MEST universe facsimiles are at the entrance to the MEST universe. And if he is looking at them while he is sitting in his chair, he has a remote viewpoint. He actually has taken a viewpoint and projected it out there and is looking at the facsimiles where they are. But remember that he's looking at his own universe! See?
His own universe is a duplicate and is a mock-up and a confirmation with the physical universe. Now you ask him to be at the entrance of the MEST universe. Well, he'll be at the point there where he is.
Well now, you don't care whether he's there in the physical universe or there in his own universe. This doesn't matter to you. You've just asked him to be at the entrance point, and here, and here. Well, you'll bring that up to present time.
For instance, most people walking around, if you were to ask them, "What's going on in your house right this moment?" and you asked them on a flash-answer basis, you know, where they've got to answer right this instant and so forth, they'd probably say, "I'm eating breakfast."
You stop somebody on the street, "Now, what's going on at your house right this moment?"
"Why, breakfast is being served." Or "My wife is washing the dishes."
He'll get that far up from the last time he saw it. In other words, the house is in past time and he is in present time right where he stands on the sidewalk. Now if you asked him to do Change of Space Processing, if... You don't do this, by the way, to a V. Now, a V can't be nothing and it will shatter him. It's just this business of "Look at nothing, fellow. Be nothing." And he just goes to pieces on it. He gets sick. All right.
The process indicated for there is he has to be able to be something and be a lot of somethingnesses and you'll eventually get him exteriorized with greater or lesser certainty until at last you can do Change of Space Processing on him.
All right. This fellow out on the sidewalk—you'd clear this up whereby it's breakfast time, which is eight o'clock or seven o'clock in the morning home and twelve noon where he's standing on the sidewalk, you'd say, "All right, be here," "Be home." "Sidewalk," "Home." "Sidewalk," "Home." "Sidewalk," "Home"—boom-boom! and he'd be in present time at home, see?
It's a very fast process. Remember that we were only erasing engrams to get people out of the past. You got that? That's the only reason we were erasing engrams was to get people off the time track. Get them unstuck. Well, the principal point of stuckness is an area in space where something injurious has occurred. Get that as the prime motive. It is not a piece of energy, it is a place in space. So we've got Change of Space Processing just as such.
Now, many a preclear would bless you to the end of his days if you'd never even vaguely consulted him what kind of case he had or anything else (of course, you'll get so you just look at people and you'll know what case level they are)—but this person seems to be—they can exteriorize a little bit, maybe, you know, that kind of an exteriorization; you didn't care about that. This fellow, you know, he's not stuck and dug in or spinning or something of the sort and if you just said to any Homo sapiens you ran across and he wanted a little help, you just said, "Now, you know where your childhood home is?"
And the fellow says, "Well, which one?"
"Well, the one which you remember mostly."
"Oh, well, you're talking about the one in Keokuk."
You say, "Fine. Be in your childhood home in Keokuk," "Be here." "Keokuk," "Here." "Keokuk," "Here." "Keokuk," "Here." "Keokuk," "Here." "Keokuk," "Here." "Keokuk," "Here." "Keokuk," "Here." "Keokuk," "Here."
All of a sudden—[gasping]. He'll say, "Gee, something happened. Yeah." He'll say, "You know, I—I feel good."
Pat him on his head and send him on his way. He'd bless you to the end of his days. You don't have to worry any more about doing anything else with him. The truth of the matter is anything from a III up to a I—which constitutes, by the way, the majority of the people you'll run into —would respond to just that process without any further filigree work.
And they would do the one thing that Freudian psychotherapy dreamed of and that was to get somebody oriented with regard to his childhood. You just oriented him totally with regard to his childhood. You did—what is a standard psychoanalysis, eighty-nine years in processing? Something like that. The only reason they can't complete them is people don't live long enough. You've done this little trick in maybe fifteen minutes, a half an hour; something like that and you've boomed them out of their childhood. You've taken care of their early rapes and their toilet training and kindergarten and you've just taken an edge off the whole case, that's all. And some analyst coming by after that would just have to work like mad to throw anything like that in restimulation and probably wind up three lives ago wondering what in earth was happening to him and have to go do Adler's work on him. You know Adler? That's where we get the word "addled" —somebody that's had some of Adler's processing. Anyway…
This boy—of course he couldn't fail. Just like poor old Freud's name in European languages and so forth means "to care" and "cold." And of course Adler probably got his name translated in English and that's why he took up druidism. Because he was undoubtedly stuck on the track, but solid, in the druid period of Europe. He wished off druidism on everybody. Oh, you didn't know that past lives had ramped this rampantly, maybe, in the field of psychoanalysis, hm? Well, this fellow, Adler—or maybe it was Jung.
Male voice: Jung.
Boy, you guys are wide awake. This fellow Adler was undoubtedly stuck someplace and so that's the place, see. Freud was undoubtedly stuck in the childhood home, so that's the place, see. Adler, he's stuck back in Roman times or some time or another and so that's the place. You know, the myths and so forth that they used.
And somebody else is completely stuck in druids. You know they used to tie people inside trees and do all sorts of weird things with them back in druid times. Good place to get stuck and so on, so we hear what as being the place of the track. And undoubtedly poor old Freud was simply stuck in his childhood home. What could you have done for Sigmund Freud? I'm just joking with the names of these people—it's rather cruel of me, because they did try. That was more than a lot of other people did.
But you could have taken him and you could've said, "Herr Doktor"—if you really wanted to do this with the proper accent of psychoanalysis 1954, you would have said, "Experience—experience the environment."
And he would have said, "Jawohl. "
And you said, "Now experience your childhood home."
"All right, now experience the environment."
And now the child— and half an hour later he wouldn't have had to have invented psychoanalysis. You would have completely spoiled Scientology, you see, because Freud's the only reason I got interested in it anyway. So you would have wiped everything out. And we wouldn't have had a psychotherapy. What's the idea of using this stuff, huh?
All right. So we get Jung being too young—and he's, by the way, the only one of the boys that's persevered up to present time here. His therapies and so forth, he never—I don't think ever took them too seriously. We get these various "stucks on the track" and any "stuck on the track" will give you some type of push or therapy or emphasis. See that?
To anybody who's being something—see, somebody being something—well, he's going to—he's just going to throw the facsimiles up into this mock-up and then he's going to hand you those facsimiles. He's not going to think. You see this? He's not going to think any more than he has to. He's going to throw those in your teeth. This is a horrible outlook, isn't it? It means that somebody busily being a generator or an electronic theta trap is going to be up there working for General Electric handing out generators and electronic theta traps, isn't it?
Q and A. If you just let these fellows steer down the road of life without any real exertion or something of the sort, they would wander into the exact Q and A where they're stuck.
And so of course they don't believe in self-determinism—that anybody can change his course of existence. See, they don't believe that this is possible because they know they couldn't. They kind of know that. They're persisting on to the bitter and cruel end of it all.
So about the first thing you have to recognize in terms of mechanics is that when an individual has had a real big somethingness made of him, that's the handiest facsimiles he's got to hand out—as a something. You know, if he's lost his fluidity and ease of communication—which is to say, if he has lost his ability to duplicate—why, then he will simply take the biggest somethingnesses which he has anywhere on the track and hand it up as the persistent facsimile.
Now, in view of the fact that a thetan—you probably doubt this; if you doubt this too much, for God sakes ask your auditor to run Wasting Pain in Brackets on you—but a thetan doesn't give a tinker's iota for pain or suffering or writhing or even terror. He doesn't care. He has to mock himself up so that it's important enough for him to care about it.
Now, what's really caring is the body, because it has an enormous vested interest. Body be writhing there in utter agony, a thetan is liable to say, "Poor thing," and move on down and sample some of it. Now, that's a somethingness for the thetan. Because again we have this matter of "that which is bad is bad because one considers it to be bad; that which is good is good because one considers it to be good." You see that?
Consideration. There is no basic real bad or good. Just like—and this is going to hit an awful lot of people real hard—just like there isn't a commodity known as happiness. There is no commodity known as happiness, there is no commodity, really, known as pain—in absence of a consideration. And if an individual is not capable of establishing his own consideration to the level of conviction for himself, he also will not be able to be happy. Because he's got to say, "I'm happy," before he's happy.
Now, somebody was asking me a little while ago, what's the difference between consideration and conviction? Do we differentiate between these two things? Yeah, we'd even differentiate wider than that.
Consideration would be a conviction on its road to happening. A conviction is something which has become set or fixed. And a consideration is merely one's judgment—which is to say, his Postulate about something.
"Well," he says, "I think it's a dry day today." That's his consideration. And if he could consider that perfectly, it isn't necessary that the rest of the world observe it's suddenly a dry day. But is it a dry day for him? That's what's important. Can he create a dry day in his own universe which he then throws out there? It probably wouldn't rain on him if he could do this real good.
Now, here we have consideration. Do you consider that you are being held to Earth? Do you consider this? All right. If you consider that this is the case that you are being held to Earth, there follows the second question: Are you convinced that you are being held to Earth?
Now as you run that, you will start first a consideration and then you will run into a conviction. The preclear—"Well yeah, I consider I'm being held to Earth." And you'll run it for just a moment or two and then all of a sudden—boy, is he convinced! See?
It looks like in the MEST universe that it's a collapse of time. You know, I mean, you've got time all beat in there together and so it's a lot of effort has happened in a very short space of time—which is to say, a lot of time. And that's a conviction in terms of the MEST universe. The MEST universe runs mechanically. And as long as it's running mechanically it follows very mechanical laws which are themselves adjudicated long since and agreed upon continually. And these mechanical laws are electronics, the laws of space, the laws of gravity, the laws of the orbits of planets, the laws of compounding of elements, the laws of nuclear physics, chemistry—all of these various things. Those are all agreements of various kinds: that's for our purposes, that's all we care about it.
Now; the thetan's own universe has been forced over here to agree completely with the physical universe and of course his own universe will eventually begin to respond to these mechanical laws which the physical universe responds to. See that?
It isn't true that the thetan's own universe only responds to these laws. As a matter of fact, you put him eight steps down into the basement when you go ahead and force him to agree with the mechanical laws of the MEST universe continually.
The thetan's own universe runs exclusively on this; consideration and conviction, on postulates! In other words, when a postulate becomes fixed or a consideration becomes fixed... You see, a Postulate is a statement, you know, and a consideration is a judgment made in the form of a statement and a conviction is an unalterable truth which is born out of having, through consideration, made a postulate which then one convinces himself of. See this?
All right. So we get the thetan's universe made out of postulates. Not out of energy. He can postulate energy into existence. He can postulate space into existence. He can place things in space. He can do all these things, you see. All right.
What's this thing that we talked about in the Doctorate tapes about agreement with the MEST universe? Well, the MEST universe is actually pretty massive. There's a lot of solid mass in it. When a thetan's own universe becomes totally in agreement with the MEST universe, then it would agree anchor point to anchor point. You see that? He wouldn't be anyplace else but in the MEST universe although he was in his own universe. See, they're agreeing perfectly, they're all obeying the same laws and so forth—we'll get a deterioration from this. Although he's running on the laws of the MEST universe, he finds out that the laws of the MEST universe aren't quite applicable in his own universe. Uh-oh—that means he can't quite agree with the MEST universe. And we get him going downhill and he eventually gets cowed into believing that the MEST universe is enormously larger than his own universe. This is just consideration. It's nothing else but consideration. He isn't even dealing, God help him, with energy masses. He's dealing with postulates.
Well now, these individuals who have to be something, who have to have pictures of things, who have to have masses of energy and all that sort of thing—these people have fixed convictions in their own universe and you might say things have happened at the moment their own universe coincided utterly with the MEST universe. Things happened at certain geographical locations of the MEST universe, therefore there is a comparable "stuck" in their own universe. You might say these two universes are pinned together with safety pins. See?
I say "safety pins" because every one of this, it says, "It mustn't happen again. In order to be safe, I've got to keep these two spots coincided so that it will never occur again." And what's dangerous? Spots in space! That's what's dangerous. Not spots in front of your eyes, but spots in space. Places, locations. Because that keeps these two universes coincident.
Now do you tie in the Doctorate tapes and that material with what we're doing here? Hm? You get that?
Agreement with the MEST universe. Every time you can make the thetan disagree with the MEST universe in Creative Processing, you'll get a jump on his case. If you can make him make things fall upside down—you know, reverse—why, he's putting his own universe to work for a change on his own determinism. He doesn't even have to be different than the MEST universe, see. He doesn't have to be different. He can be the same as the MEST universe but just not agree with it. Because agreeing with it, itself, requires a postulate: "I am now agreeing with the MEST universe."
All right. Therefore we get this Change of Space Processing. What we're doing is wiping out those points where his own universe and the MEST universe, in terms of points in space, are in coincidence. You've got two boxes, and one box is sitting inside the other box and they're indistinguishable, actually, as far as two boxes are concerned, and we have a point which is the same in both boxes. Well, those two boxes, we'll say, are pinned together with the safety pin "it mustn't happen again" at that point. And that point is the same point to both boxes.
You see, he had to make a big postulate and agreement, "Look, I got a universe this big, too. Ha-ha!" He says, "Look, I—you know, all this. Well, my universe, it's mine, I—just as big as that. And this is my universe," he says.
Slight error, not very significant. And he could make it go on and stick from there on. He could make it stick forever, except that he does this: it's his universe and it doesn't quite obey his controls. So what's he done? He's mocked-up his own universe to be the same as the MEST universe and then he's found out he couldn't control the MEST universe so he winds up by believing he can't control his own universe. You see, it backfires on him.
His own universe doesn't have to be any different than the MEST universe. The MEST universe is nothing particularly to avoid. It's a patsy. It can't do anything to a thetan without his consent. See that? Can't do a thing to anybody unless they consent to it. Well, that doesn't say even be afraid of consent. It just operates on those laws and people that you find in the MEST universe are operating on those laws because they've got their own universe mocked-up to agree with the MEST universe and then their own universe is or is not operating on the same laws as the MEST universe.
Now you get somebody who is coincided very badly, you know, and jammed down. He's agreed thoroughly with the MEST universe. He agreed that only those laws exist. The MEST universe can't create energy. If it can't create energy, there isn't going to be any energy generated around there, therefore he's going to have to have it from someplace else—and you get eating and energy interchanges and so forth. Has to be fed energy from elsewhere. This is why havingness—it just takes hold of that conviction and it works with that conviction to build the universe all the way back up again. Remember, it's a low-echelon technique. All right. It's a more important technique than many others, but it's a low-echelon technique.
All right. We've got this individual and he has retreated. He says, "The MEST universe is so big and powerful and I am so little." Well, they're stuck together someplace. Change of Space is how you unstick them—one method of how you unstick them. Usually the one which you would use if you wanted to spring these universes totally apart—bing. You just backtrack the agreement. And that is, he agreed every time there was a dangerous spot in the MEST universe that he remember it in his own universe, and these two spots are coincidents and there it is. Well, you start wiping those spots and the two universes spring apart, just as easy. Actually there's no trick to it.
He's got the home, childhood home, coincided with Keokuk. But he's got his childhood home, which occurred in 1930, coincided with Keokuk 1954. So when he thinks of Keokuk 1954, he thinks of Keokuk 1930. In other words, he's out of present time in Keokuk. He might be pretty well in present time right where you are, but in Keokuk he's out of present time. And a person's command zone is as large as he can maintain present time. If he can only maintain present time to the size of the room, his command zone is the size of the room.
All right. So we want to get everything into present time, we use Change of Space. Change of Space, as I said, there's an example that goes that way: "Be here," "Be the place where you made your first facsimile." All right. "First facsimile." All right. "Here," or "Room," "First facsimile." "Room," "First facsimile." "Room," "First facsimile." "Room," "First facsimile."
How long do you keep it up? You'll find out a lot of things peel off and all of a sudden he finds an earlier first facsimile. Don't let this worry you. Just get the earlier one.
The next thing you know, there's a ripping, tearing, roaring sound and there's an explosion or there's some little manifestation or, without any pyrotechnics, he simply says, "[gasp]." He's up in present time in the place where he made his first facsimile. That's all you want. You don't go any further than that. Just get him into present time. They're unstuck. Now you've got those safety pins out.
You'll find, by the way, at the same time, he won't worry so much about making facsimiles. He's so worried about making facsimiles he makes them obsessively and then cats them up before he makes them. He doesn't care about time. Time works in the MEST universe by co-action of particles. Particles move and so you get time in action. That is time.
And in his own universe, he would have to have a co-action of particles to have time. Well, maybe he just neglected to put a co-action of particles in his own universe, therefore everything in his own universe is stuck. This one he never agreed to. So it's just—everything is stuck and motionless in his own universe and always has been. When he put up something, why, he put it up. They don't have any comets running around loose untended.
Now, what difference is there between this Change of Space Processing and Occupation of Space as a process? Well, it's the same difference that beingness poses in any process. Because Occupation of Space is a Beingness Process. A person has to be some space. Now, that's different than being at a point in space, you see. That's different than being a viewpoint. You're asking him to be some space.
Now, there's many a preclear will do some interesting things on this Occupation of Space Process. Change of Space, Occupation of Space: they're two different processes. One unpins his own universe from the MEST universe and the other one gets the first piece of space he made—and he went stupid right there, by the way, because space doesn't know a thing. He made the space and became the space and that's that. All right. Now he goes around saying he doesn't know. Well, he's being some space—well, how can he know anything? Well, he can't! Space doesn't know anything.
All right. Now, we get, then, as a process, Occupation of Space in a great many situations beyond than just picking up that first space. But that's your target with such a thing. Occupation of Space is done similar to Change of Space—but remember it's Occupation of Space. Not "Be at the entrance point of the MEST—your entrance to the MEST universe; here. Entrance point; here." No, different.
This is the way it goes: "Be the space of your body," "Be the space back of your head." "Be the space of your body," "The space back of your head." "The space of your body,"
"Space back of your head." "The space of the room." "Space of the room," "Space of the body, " "Space back of your head." "Space of the building," "Space of the room." "Space of your body," "Space of the building." "Space of the town."
See this? But you better not run this on anybody who can't be space—sort of pointless. He has to be able to be a piece of space with certainty before he can run Occupation of Space Processing, just as he has to be able to exteriorize, at least with some tiny little certainty, before he can do some Change of Space Processing. Both of these are conditional processes, then, which depend upon other processes. But both of them are processes which have to be run on the preclear.
Let me emphasize that: They have to be run on the preclear if you're going to stabilize him. You're not going to get out of it. I'm sorry, it's been months, now, and months and months and there's nothing supplanted these processes.
They require a certain state of case. They can be run at any time—Change of Space can be run at any time that the individual can even vaguely be made to exteriorize. So it could be run really on about a IV, a III, but not a V —tear him to pieces. All right. Don't ask me why it'll tear him to pieces; I've never investigated it beyond the fact he's pinned to the MEST universe all over the place. Now I'm going to give you an alternate process for a V in just a moment with this same motive. All right.
Now, Change of Space is point to point. You can have a lot of points, you see. You could say, "Be near Earth," "Be near the Moon," "Be near the Sun." That's Change of Space, you see. "Be the center of Earth," "Center of the Moon," "Center of the Sun." That's Change of Space. "Be above your head," "Below your feet," "In front of your body," "Back of your body." That's Change of Space. See?
Every once in a while somebody writes me in and tells me about this as a new exteriorization process. This is not. This is just Change of Space Processing. It's a lousy way to exteriorize people anyhow, because it concentrates them back on the body and throws another universe into play. Now, you see, you've got the thetan's own universe and you've got the physical universe. Well, that's enough for you to worry about. Then this next guy, he's concentrated on the body. Well, you've just thrown a third universe in there. See, the body's got a universe too. And it's really solid and packed down. You start freeing it up and some of the darnedest facsimiles will fly off of it.
Some people are so concentrated on the body's universe that they completely neglect their own universe and the physical universe. As a matter of fact, it is a particular road people take as they spin.
Not necessarily true, you see. A person can also take the road and spin on the physical universe—you know, just completely ignore the body universe and just spin on the physical universe. Also somebody can spin on somebody else's universe. You'll find a preclear around sometime that every time he runs something he'll say, "And—and when I was—when I was six, I just—just remembered this with great clarity, my father took me down to the seash—. No, no, that was Gertrude. And her father took her down. Yes, that's right."
And you'll go on for another few minutes of auditing and he'll suddenly say, "Well, it was the awfullest tonsillectomy. They—well, as a matter of fact my tonsillectomy happened when I was about five."
You say, "What were you going to say?"
"Oh, that's nothing. It was just my former wife's tonsillectomy, it... Strange, I had a somatic on it."
What's he doing? Well, he started—he's run somebody else's universe. And you'll find somebody twisted around that way and he's so concentrated on running somebody else's universe that he's avoiding his body's universe, his own universe and the physical universe. You'll find this case, he's protected somebody fairly recently and so on. Well, the best way to do some process like that is to just bring him up the line a little ways and, for heaven's sakes, run him on Change of Space between that person and himself. Get him back to his own body anyhow.
There was one case—case in point—one case, very resistive for years and years, and this poor auditor had audited this fellow on and off for a long time and he had finally sort of given it up as a bad job. The fellow appeared in Camden a few months ago. I called the auditor in and I said, "This fellow talk about his wife a lot?" The reason I knew this is because I asked the fellow bluntly, I said, "When did you think your life caved in?" and he said, "It's when my wife left me." Okay. That's the usual, standard answer.
So I got ahold of his former auditor instead of auditing the case myself or turning him over to some auditor around there; this auditor was a student. And I said, "Well, take the preclear into some other room."
And "Oh," he says, "my God! Hey, don't—what you—hey, don't do that to me. I have audited this fellow hundreds of hours with no results, because the fellow just doesn't want to get well," and so forth.
And I said, "Well, just calm down, because I want you to take him into the other room and tell him to be where his former wife is and to be here. And be there and be here." This guy was not a V, he was about a IV—SOP 8 IV. Change of Space.
And the fellow right off the bat says, "Well, I don't even know where she is. I've lost track of her. That's been years."
The fellow says, "All right, be where she... Be here, there," buump—all of a sudden pop, bang—eight minutes and her universe was out of his life. Case started to progress. Of course, the poor guy couldn't get anyplace with auditing, he was auditing his wife's universe. Totally. And any mixture that he had in it was his body's universe versus his wife's universe. See, this was very confusing. This left his universe as a thetan and the physical universe out of it entirely. He was never in present time. See how this is?
Problem: In which universe is your preclear stuck in? Well, he's probably stuck in lots of them so you needn't worry about it, but as you run into them, you know how to solve it. Just Change of Space.
Now, Occupation of Space. Energy, you see, pretty well falls into the category—you clean up a lot of energy and handle a lot of energy by Change of Space Processing. It's actually a space process, but it cleans up a lot of energy. Well, Occupation of Space hardly ever cleans up any energy to amount to anything. If it does, you don't care. Because you're shooting for the first piece of space on the track. And you can get there—occupation of space, not by changing the spaces at all. See? You can use it as a change of space. Occupation of Space: be this space, be that space, be some other space. Okay. But you don't have to use it that way.
You want the first time he turned his knowingness off. Well, Scientology is the science of knowing how to know. Well, therefore any point which comes up that you can directly address or approach which will increase the preclear's knowingness comes a little bit closer to fitting our goals than anything else.
So, we want the first space. Don't tell him, "the first space you made" —this would probably exceed his belief or credulity. You say, "Now, be the first space"—something on that order.
If you were just to take a guy who felt this very vaguely and do this to him, I don't know what you'd do to him, because I'd never do it like this.
You could say, "Be this first space. All right, now be it." "Now you find any energy around there? All right. Be that piece of energy." "Be a space," "Be the energy." "Be a space," "Be the energy." "Be a space," "Energy." "Space," "Energy." "Space," "Energy." "Space," "Energy." Fine. "Now as the energy," "Now be yourself." "Be the energy," "Be yourself." "Be the energy," "Be yourself." "Be the energy," "Be yourself." "Be the energy," "Be yourself." "Be the energy," "Be yourself." Each time waiting for a response from him, of course, and "Be the space," "Be yourself." "Be that first piece of space," "Be yourself." "Be the first piece of space," "Be yourself."
But I say you can't run this on a person right off the bat. Therefore, what do you have to do? You have to work Beingness Processing on him up to a point where he can be a space with certainty. So you run Beingness Processing until he can be a space with certainty and then flip him into this.
Now, if you were to run the process just long enough, you would leave him in the dumbest frame of mind you've ever seen a human being in. Because his first cut-down of knowingness was that creation of space.
Created space is a limitation of knowingness so as to make a game. And the way it does it is by creating distance. You say, "I am at this end of the distance and therefore do not know what is at the other end of the distance." And that is why, and the total rationale and how it cuts down.
So we'd run this—again, just give you a repeat with all the missing parts in—we'd just find things he could be, you see, and then more things he could be, and then all of a sudden we'd get alert to this, pretty soon he'll be spaces. We coax him to be spaces. We find some spaces he can be with certainty and some energy masses he can be with certainty. We will work with these and take a little tension off the case and then we just work him right on back to being that first piece of space.
After he's been some space with some confidence, why, you can simply say, "Be the first piece of space." "All right. Now you find some energy around there?" "All right. Be that piece of energy." "Now be the space," "Be the energy." "Be the space," "Be the energy.
Actually, in auditing, the way it would sound is: "Now, be the first piece of space. Now, can you be that piece of space?"
"Well, yeah."
All right. A little earlier than that it'd sound this way: "You know I can just be the space of this room just fine."
"Oh? Well, all right. Now can you be the firs/ space that you ever walked into?"
"Yeah, yeah."
"All right, be that space."
And the preclear would say, "Uh-huh."
You say, "All right. Now you find a piece of energy around there anyplace?"
"Oh, yeah. There's a piece of energy there."
"Well, can you be that?"
"Well, yeah, I can be that."
"All right. Be the space,"
"Be the energy."
"Be the space,"
"Be the energy."
"Be the space,"
"Be the energy." See? Waiting for his response every time.
"Be the space."
"Yeah. "
"Be the energy."
"Yeah."
"Be the space."
"Yeah."
"Be the energy."
"Yeah."
"All right, now be yourself."
But you're going to get hooked every once in a while when you do that. The fellow is going to say, "Nyeeojpnnp! Oh, I don't feel good."
And if you were to do this process: "Be that first piece of energy you ever were," "Then be yourself." "Now be the first piece of energy you ever were," "Now be yourself," and skip it, this guy is liable to walk off in a fog. And if he doesn't know how to patch himself up with Scientology, he's liable to walk off the nearest curb. This boy would not be in very good shape. Why?
Well, the first and only manifestation he'd have is his tremendous stupidity. Why is he stupid? Well, energy doesn't know anything. Space doesn't know anything. And so of course he's stupid.
Now, you got that as a process. Where are you going with Beingness Processing? Well, there's another place you can go with Beingness Processing. You start to ask some Vor VI on Beingness Processing and he's heavy objects, heavy objects, heavy objects, heavy objects, heavy objects, heavy objects, lighter objects. He's coming on up the line. Before you've done this very long, you're liable to have a IV on your hands anyway.
After he's fairly well accustomed to being heavy objects, remember, he is being that first piece of energy. He might not be able to be the space, but he can certainly be that first piece of energy, can't he?
Well, you can slip him back in that direction. You can slip him back in that direction on energy. Just neglect space at first, you'll at least get him out of the energy part of the track.
Now, you haven't done Change of Space Processing on him simply because he's right there. He hr being that first piece of energy—that's right where he is. So you can run that. But again, any time you process somebody like that, you process them real gentle-like. Don't make any fast motions with your hands. You could ask them to be things for a lot of hours of processing before they'd finally come up with a piece of space, something like this, or a piece of energy. You just work with them until you got it.
Now, the safest way to do it would simply—work with them until they could be masses of energy with fair ease or they could be spaces with fair ease and slide them into that first piece of space and that first piece of energy.
Now, there's another way of exteriorization which is sometimes quite effective, right in there with Beingness Processing. Sometimes quite effective on a low-level case; it's always effective on a higher-level case. And that is, you ask the individual to be on the roof and then ask him to be something that can't be on the roof. Then ask him to be on the roof. And ask him to be something that can't be on the roof. And ask him to be something that can be on the roof and something that can't be on the roof.
Now, if you've gotten this boy exteriorized and he hasn't got enough sight to worry about and he's fogged up and his unreality is pretty strong, this process all by itself will snap up his reality and materially increase his perception.
Let's say we've just got him out of his head and he doesn't quite know whether he's there or you ask him to be on the roof and he's not sure. A fast route out is to ask him to be something that can't be on the roof. The patter would run this way: "Be on the roof. Now be something that can't be on the roof. All right. Unbe that and be back on the roof again. All right. Now be something that can't be on the roof. All right. Unbe that and be on the roof."
And I don't know how long you could keep this up, but you would occasionally go through bog spots with it—you know, he'd get real boggy—merely because you keep telling him to postulate that he can't be on the roof. But he'll eventually get tired of postulating it and be on the roof.
Well, theoretically that might work with a V. Certainly works with a IV. It would work with a V with some liability. It'll work with a IV, a Ill, a Il, a I. And any time your boy says, "I'm not certain whether I'm on the roof or not. I'm not quite sure," you say, "Be something that can't be on the roof, now be on the roof. Be something that can't be, now be on the roof. Now be..." and all of a sudden his certainty picks right up on the thing.
You've keyed-out the fixed obsession which he has on some object which of course couldn't see anything from the roof. He's busy being, let's say, a locomotive. If he's a locomotive, he isn't going to see a thing from the roof. He isn't going to see a thing anyhow.
All right. So that's a nice, Slippy method which you must remember in order to clear up people's perception. Now let's go on to the V and VI and V Il and let's see if there isn't some sort of a method by which you can fish them out to IV, so that you can run enough beingness on them and "be something that can't be on the roof" and so forth and run enough Change of Space on them and run enough Occupation of Space on them in order to straighten them out gloriously. Is there such a process? Well, there is.
The process is more or less understood but not pushed, because it's a process which requires some expertness in SOP 8-C. It is understood in Step I: places where you are not. There's another way of running that. That's a safe way to run it—you'll never get anybody in trouble asking him for places he's not. But there is this one: places where you can be. And immediately revealed to you will be the entire mechanism of psychosis. You inspect this one, because that is the route that is taken by the psychotic or by anybody going on downscale.
You see, the more places they hold on to in these two coincided universes (their own universe and the MEST universe), the more places they hold on to with safety pins—you see, because they can't go there anymore—the less places they can occupy, to a point finally where they can't have anything like a piece of space. Because all these places of space are so darned dangerous that they can't occupy them anymore. So they've been chased out of space, you might say, and they are down in a condensed mass. Well, if they're in this condensed mass, then obviously you have to rehabilitate these points in space where they can't be.
Well, is there some Slippy way of rehabilitating them without chewing them up with Change of Space or chewing them up with something else? Now is there one? Yes. And the mechanism of psychosis is—immediately just presents itself—boom!
This is magic. This is strictly magic. You ask somebody, "Give me some places you can be." If you run him on this on an E-Meter—and that's ahpays safest; that's always best—on somebody that you're having a little touch and go with, for God sakes, put him on an E-Meter, then he can never lie to you. You know whether he's processing what you say or not because the needle responds as you talk. And if it isn't—some other way, you're wasting your time. This is characteristic of anybody, by the way, who is a IV, V, VI or VII, that he will avoid your auditing commands or do them some other fashion. So check them on an E-Meter—for his own sake! Not because you're a cop. Just check them for himself.
All right. Now, you ask him places he can be. And he'll find that he can be places in the past. If he's real bad off, he can almost be anyplace in the past. See? That's where he is. He's out of present time. He's in the past. Well, all the present time places are no longer available to him. Future and present time spots in space are no longer available to him. So you've chased him off into facsimiles. Life has chased him off into facsimiles. He can't be any other place.
And of course the psychotic goes into the past and dramatizes the past and uses facsimiles. You can't create any energy in the past. You can't be in the year 1066 and create enough energy to fire one arrow which will change the course of the Battle of Hastings. Can't be done. All right. Therefore, it's perfectly safe to be there. But if you're there, you can't create any energy. So the fellow just goes on using facsimiles. The first time he started using facsimiles was the first time he found it was safer to be in the past than in the present.
It's the present time space that continues to be dangerous. This guy is not as silly as you think. He's not really crazy. He says, "Now I was hit by a fire engine at the corner of Tenth and Swabash. Therefore Tenth and Swabash is a dangerous point in space. But I can be hit by a fire engine at Tenth and Swabash in the past. Because I'm alive now and I've been hit in the past. So the only way I can be at Tenth and Swabash is to bc in the past. I can't be there in the present because it's a dangerous area. Something else is liable to happen. Because things happen there. But I can be there in the past—it's already happened." You get the insanity of this logic? But that's very sane logic. That's smart. That's as smart as a thetan ever gets.
He goes off into the past. Here he goes. And we get the boy who was sitting there in a sanitarium screaming, raving. He's perfectly safe, he knows he's safe—he's in the past. He can be in the past. We check anybody who is a little bit off or who has lost his command over the environment or he's dangerous to the environment—dangerousness, he's lost it, he's lost his command over the environment—we'll find that individual sitting out of present time almost every place except where he immediately is. And you say, "Give me someplace you can be," and he's liable to throw a loop on you, by the way, if he's real bad off. And you would just ask him this and he says, "Well uh, hmm."
He thinks you're asking to be someplace in present time because this is what he's really scared of. You'll have to help him over the hurdle. The second he stalls on that or even looks like he's going to stall, you just simply say, "Well, where in the past can you be?"
"Oh, let's see, I can be in San Francisco and Mars and—oh boy, all over the place." Boy, can he be all over the past. Well, just run him all over the past. Just have them chalk them off by the hour. He will, too. Only it's a dirty trick. Because every time you chalk them off and get him to recognize a past place, it deintensifies. And you can blow up the whole track with this: "Where can you be in the past?" Bang, bang, bang, bang, thud, thud, thud, thud.
Well now, if you really want to butcher him if he's been mean to you [laughter], why, you can simply butcher him by making him point out the places in present time and say, "Well, I can be up there south of that star and I can be down there in the center of the Earth" and all of a sudden, somatics—ooh boy, you've never seen any somatics the way they'll turn on, on a preclear that you make do that. You just make him make the statement that he can be there and he can be there and be there, if he's at V or below, his whole universe starts to just cave right on in on him.
Well, I have no doubt that you could probably run it out that way. I've no doubts of this. But why kill the preclear? You've caught the body's universe in between him and the physical universe. And it's liable to practically kill him. But you find places he can be, on and on and on, and all of a sudden he says places he can be in the past, why, hell, hc can be someplace in the present. Fine! Let's be someplace in the present until we can be in a particular point of space and then find him able to be a object and then find him able to be a space and then find the first space and then have him be the first space, the first energy, the first space, the first energy and then himself in the first space, the first energy, and the bulk of his shutdown will be gone. And there is a road to Clear.
Thank you.
