a highly skilled craftsman in a trade or profession qualified to practice independently and to train others. In Medieval times a Master signified a person who had attained a high level of technical and artistic perfection in a trade. He had his own workshop and was an employer of apprentices and journeymen whom he trained and paid in exchange for their work.
