Definitions

1. the mantling originally consisted of two strips of material that fell from the top of the helmet on either side of the head and, according to some sources, protected the helmet from the heat and rust. As the designing of coats of arms became more popular during the Middle Ages, the mantling was added as part of the design. In the Sea Org coat of arms, it falls to either side of the crest in cloth like or ribbon-like folds. (FO 3350)
