Definitions

a condition in which a person has something he is afraid to hear. He plays the radio very loudly, makes people repeat continually and misses pieces of the conversation. Men and women are "hysterically" deaf without any conscious knowledge of it. Their "hearing just isn't so good." In Dn, this is being called hypo-hearing, (hypo=under). (DMSMN, p. 189)
