Do you recall the other day I stood up and made a circle and I asked you to duplicate it? Remember that? And you kept on fooling around, but the most of you came to the realization after a while what the definition of duplication was. That correct?

What would a perfect duplicate be?

Audience: [various responses]

And what else?

Audience: Same space. Same time. Same space. Time.

That's right. And what else?

Audience: Using the same energy.

That's right. That would be a perfect duplicate: same mass, same space, same energy, same time, same thing.

Recognizing, then, that the definition of a duplicate, if it is to be perfect, must be a perfect duplicate now – must be an impulse or particle or idea which occupies the same space, the same time with the same mass and the same energy as the original.

And if one were to start fighting duplication, the formula of duplication would eventually sneak up on one and cause one to entirely identify. Do you see that? In this universe, that which one resists one becomes. Right? So, if one started fighting this idea of a perfect duplication, some part of it or another would gradually be enforced until all of it was enforced upon the individual and so he would then be identified with that which he refused to duplicate. Hence, compulsive beingness.

Beingness is the identity at a source-point or receipt-point. Right? A beingness. All right. Then the unwillingness to be at a source-point or receipt-point would result in a compulsive beingness and one would become rather against one's will.

If will is defined by Schopenhauer as stubbornness taking the place of the intellect or stubbornness is will taking the place of the intellect – he was a great syllogism man, so he wouldn't care whether I quoted that this way or that way – if that were the case then one might say that a stubborn man would become that which he was stubborn about. Or one's will would eventually become the will of the thing he was unwilling about.

That's the way this universe happens to be rigged and the way its energy runs. If you've heard the Philadelphia Lectures, Doctorate Lectures, so called (Philadelphia, 1952), you will recognize with all too clarity: what one doesn't want, one acquires; what one wants, one doesn't acquire. That sort of a thing is what it comes down to.

But more important than that, anything one agrees with will disagree with one. That's a more important factor. That with which one agrees will disagree. That with which one disagrees will agree. I mean, the human behavior operating on this principle is quite interesting.

He thinks he wants something and then when he gets it, he doesn't want it. That's almost complete. And that's because he didn't really want anything in the first place. So, he's just running on the same considerations he started with.

To want and then not to want could be itself "time." If you pull something in and then you say, "Oh, no," and you say that something else over there is more desirable and you'll pull that in. And you say, "Oh, no," and so on and so it goes.

You say, "I want this viewpoint. Now I don't want it." This is interesting manifestation – reverse flows. All kinds of interesting phenomena concerning energy, but the funny part of it is, is not any of it is important to you today. None of it is really important to you. You don't even have to question it or worry about it or challenge it. It just happens that it works that way.

You're more interested in this: duplication. That which one will not duplicate, one has an awfully good chance of becoming. That which one becomes, he hopes won't be duplicated because it would go by the boards if it were duplicated. How do you make the MEST universe vanish? Plow could you make it appear brightly and then disappear entirely? Interesting question.

A lot of thetans who have difficulty communicating with something, immediately alert and their theta ears waggle. Just how could we go about doing this? What is the deep and desperate secret?

Well, as a matter of fact, I went down three tombs' stairways and read the frieze on the wall which was in a language which had to be read backwards and upside down with a mirror. And having deciphered this (which was an unholy script) by a candlelight made out of frog wax, at 12:01 A.M. of course, in the time of a half-moon (that was why nobody ever got it before; they kept trying to read it in a full moon; actually, it was a half-moon), discovered this esoteric material – which is to say, a duplicate. It said right there on the frieze, "A duplicate, to be a perfect duplicate, must occur in the same space at the same time with the same mass and energy." Yeah, that's a perfect duplicate.

And the fellow who goes out and mocks-up a duplicate and then mocks-up another duplicate alongside of it and then mocks-up another duplicate alongside of that and then mocks-up another duplicate alongside of that, horribly enough, is not duplicating.

How would he duplicate a duplicate then? I mean, how would he duplicate something he \vas supposed to duplicate? Well, I'll give you a little example of this.

Mock-up a mock-up in front of you. Got a mock-up? Okay.

Now, alongside of that, mock-up another mock-up. I didn't tell you to duplicate it.

Now, alongside of that, mock-up another mock-up.

Now, alongside of that, mock-up another mock-up.

Now, alongside of that, mock-up another mock-up. You got several now?

Well, push them all together into the original.

Now, mock-up a mock-up of what you've got now, alongside of it.

Now, push that into the original. You got an original? All right.

Now, let's mock-up a duplicate. Where would it be?

Female voice: Same place.

Same space as the original. Mock-up a duplicate, now. Remember, same time.

Same time.

Mock-up another duplicate,

Another duplicate. Anybody got an original left? Well, if you have, mock-up another duplicate. What you worried about? What happened? Something happen?

Male voice: Yeah, I got the wall stuck up.

Female voice: It's true. What happened?

Female voice: I'm trying to decide. I'm not sure. You're not sure what happened?

Female voice: No, I'm not sure what happened. You still got that original? Female voice: Well I – it's there somewhere. It's still there? Well, all right.

Right in the spot where you've got that original, let's make up a duplicate in the same time as the original.

Female voice: Oh, now I don't got the original.

Oh, it disappeared!

Female voice: Yen Oh, horrible. And that was the poorly understood but valiantly used mechanism of Dianetics. You got the duplicate into the same time by you going back to the time and putting up a duplicate of the facsimile. And those that did that, got an erasure. And those that didn't know enough to do that, didn't get an erasure. If you couldn't duplicate very well, engrams wouldn't erase. You wouldn't go back to the same time in the first place, you'd go back to a different time as one method of not duplicating; wouldn't run the engram where it occurred but around your body or something. You understand what happened now? Didn't get it in the same time or the same space exactly.

If you'd gotten anything in the same time or the same space, you would have had a sensation of it disappearing. And that is the mechanism of an erasure of Dianetics. You would have duplicated it in the same time and the same place as the original. Now do we understand this? Anybody who doesn't understand this?

Some of you maybe didn't get a complete vanishment of your original when you duplicated it. Did somebody fail to get that? Well, the three hands that rose, you needn't have told me. All right. I could have guessed that it wouldn't have gone away.

Now, why doesn't it go away? Why don't all this energy go away? Why don't these big black masses and these horrible faces and all of this scramble, scramble, scramble of energy that runs around one's head, and – why don't these all go away, huh?

Well, the fellow says, "Nothing's happening to my case. Nothing's happening to my case." He might as well be saying, "I'm not duplicating. I'm not duplicating. I can't duplicate." That's all he could be saying if he's saying this: "There is a persistent mass of energy around me or in my field of vision and I'm still in a body."

Now, let's take up that latter one. If he is still in a body, it must be that he is utterly unwilling to duplicate that body because all he'd have to do is this: All right. Right where you sit, duplicate your body.

Duplicate it again.

Duplicate it again right where you sit.

What you doing? Hm? Now, what you doing when you do that? Female voice: Ala king a body.

You're making a body. Where are you making it?

Female voice: In the exact time, space and the same location.

Mm-hm. All right. And where is that?

Female voice: Here.

You sure of that?

Female voice: Very

Now, listen to me carefully. Your body, I said, not your idea of your body. I said your body. Now, duplicate your body right where it is.

Do it again. Duplicate it where it is again.

Let's duplicate it where it is again.

Now, what's happening as you do this? Now, let's check it over. What are you leaving out when you duplicate your body? Now, let's get much more factual now and much more duplicative. Some people are duplicative and some people are impossible.

Now, let's take a good look at this body now, at the actual body or any energy mass around it. In other words, the exact manifestation, the exact phenomenon which it presents and duplicate it, just as it is. Now, I don't care whether this is mock-up, or mock-up and the body, or just the body. Whatever it is, just duplicate it exactly where it is.

Do it again.

Okay. Who's using energy to do this? Okay. Now, listen to me carefully. The definition of a duplicate is the same space and the same time – got that? – with the same energy and the same mass. We got that perfectly? You got that? Same energy, same mass in the same time and the same place. Same, same, same, same. You understand that?

Now, what are you doing using energy to make a duplicate? Now, make a duplicate right where you are, right where you sit, of your body. You don't have to be sitting in the body, but make a duplicate of that body right where it sits.

Make another one.

Now, let's check it over. What you leaving out? What you leaving out? It's probably something around you someplace you're leaving out.

Now, let's make a duplicate of it this time – of the whole thing.

And another duplicate.

Now, make another duplicate of your body.

Okay. What are you leaving out now?

Audience: [various responses]

Well, you know. You're the guy that's looking at this. Are you making a duplicate of what you hope is there or what you think is there or simply what you're looking at?

Now, let's just make a duplicate of what we're looking at. Now, make a duplicate of what you're looking at. Make another duplicate of what you're looking at. Now, how about making a duplicate of what you're feeling. And another duplicate of what you're feeling.

Now, let's just make a duplicate of the whole thing: what you know is there, what you think is there, what you're looking at and what you're feeling and what you're hoping. Come on, make a duplicate of it.

All right. Now, let's check over the body very carefully and see what happened. Just check it over very carefully and see what happened. I haven't seen a single hand move. I said check the body over very carefully and see if it's there. Is it there? Huh? Check it over. You got one?

Audience: Um… hum.

You got one real good?

All right. Now, let's make a duplicate of it. Let's make another duplicate of it.

Okay. Now, is anybody present putting a body alongside of this body? Or in back of it? Or below it? Anybody doing that? Where you putting these duplicates?

Female voice: In the same place…

That's right. Right in the same place.

Well now, how about the same time?

Audience: Yeah.

You know, I see an awful lot of bodies here in front of me. Let's do it in the same time.

All right. Let's make another duplicate now in the same time. Male voice: I suppose I'm not fast yet.

Come on. Let's make a body there in the same time. Don't go lagging after the time. Let's just put it there in exactly the same time as the body. If that is the beginning of the session, you're wrong. Let's put a body there in the same time, right this second.

Let's try it again. Put a body right there. Put it there in the same time? Well, all right.

Are there any energy masses hanging around this body now? Well, if there are, for heaven's sakes, put a duplicate into them. Or make a duplicate of them in their time. Making a duplicate of them in their time now? All right.

Has anybody got any black masses still hanging around? Occlusions and so forth? Well, put it there in its proper time.

Now, make a duplicate of it in its own time. You can sort of adjust your sights on it, if you care to.

I don't doubt but what somebody or other is getting a somatic right about now. Anybody getting a somatic? Well, why aren't you duplicating it? Let's duplicate that somatic in its own time, of course, which is when?

Is it right now? All right.

Well, you can tell because if you've made an exact duplicate of it in the right time, it isn't there. If it's still there, you didn't make an exact duplicate of it and that's all there is to it.

All right. Let's make another duplicate of your body. This is witchcraft, [laughs] Did you do that easily?

All right. Now, I tell you what you do. Let's look up at the right wall of the room. Look at the right wall of the room.

Now, pick out a representative section of it and duplicate that section. Did you duplicate it? How did you duplicate it?

Audience: [various responses]

How did you duplicate it? Who put a lot of new energy and a big mass over there? All right.

Let's look at that section again and duplicate it again.

And again. Who's all of a sudden got more wall to duplicate? Anybody got more wall to duplicate than they had before?

All right. Let's make a duplicate again.

And again.

And again.

And another duplicate. Did you do that? Okay.

See this object – an object – take an object up here at the front of the room. Duplicate it.

And duplicate it again.

And duplicate it again.

And duplicate it again.

And duplicate it again. Anybody putting any new energy into it?

Well, there's nothing wrong with putting some new energy into it as long as you duplicate that, too.

Duplicate it again. Something happening to your visio?

Duplicate it again. Person who makes it disappear has got to buy me a new water jug.

Duplicate it again.

Are you seeing more of the front of the room? Do you have a tendency to see more of the front of the room when you do this? All right.

Duplicate it again.

Duplicate it again. All right.

Now, let's look at the ceiling.

Duplicate it.

And duplicate it again.

And duplicate it again.

And duplicate it again.

And duplicate it again. Okay.

Now, duplicate the chair you're sitting in.

And duplicate it again.

Now, duplicate the amount of control which you ordinarily carry on your body. And again.

And be five feet back of your head. Be where you please.

Find the floor beneath your feet.
